E-bikes and e-bike insurance
E-bike insurance is not a legal requirement here in the UK, but there are multiple insurance covers that you might want to consider. Read on for top tips when you compare electric bicycle insurance.
Bike theft is a very common problem in the U.K. If your bike is secured with the required lock you'll be covered for theft. You should consider cover for aggravated theft too as it's sadly on the rise.
Most products offer damage cover, so you should be ok in that regard.
There are many more risks to consider when cycling, which sadly, some don't. You may be injured, or you could injure someone or damage their property. So, look for injury and third party liability cover too.
As with all insurance products, check the terms and conditions of the cover. When you're getting a bicycle insurance quote, ensure you're purchasing the right cover.
What Extra Covers Can I Get With E-bike Insurance
If you intend to travel to Europe or perhaps worldwide with your bicycle
Breakdown can also include bicycle hire and the cost to get home
When you're entering competitions and events and need cover for theft and race fees
How Much Does It Cost To Insure An E-Bike?
Unfortunately some areas are a greater risk than others
Whilst you may need to be at least 18 to get cover, you may be able to add younger additional riders
The more expensive the bike, the greater the premium. Take advantage of multi-bike discounts
Adding additional cover like competing and accessories will increase the price of your insurance
Commuting often comes as an additional charge as there's a greater risk when leaving your e-bike at the station or in a work car park
Be careful for those who offer you a low price then sting you at policy renewal. Cycler offer a guaranteed renewal price promise, check it out
Are There Any Cover Exclusions I Should Be Aware Of?
You have to be able to evidence your financial interest and ownership in order to make a claim. keep your purchase receipt close!
Most providers will insist that you can evidence that you own and used a rated lock in the event of theft
You won't be covered for wear and tear of your bicycle and accessories - also considered as cosmetic damage (dent's/scrapes etc)
Most product providers will not cover you for using your e-bike for work. Riding to and from should be covered if you've selected that option (leisure & commuting)
You guessed it, if you're influenced by either drugs or alcohol, you won't be covered
This is the excess you have to pay in the event of a claim. be careful for products that state it's a percentage of the claim value - this can be very costly!
What Our Expert Thinks
As with all insurance products, the devil is always in the detail. The great news is that cycling enthusiasts are very careful and considerate individuals and as e-bike insurance is not mandated or legally required, and is a choice, enthusiasts tend to scrutinise the cover on offer much more so than others when comparing insurance.
However, some of the same practices exist in e-bicycle insurance as it does in other insurance classes such as offering really low premiums to attract you but with high policy excesses (look out for percentage excesses on claim value specifically!), not offering the cover that might be suitable. Take time to read the terms, ask questions and ensure the product meets your needs. A really simple way to do this is to view the 'Insurance Product Information Document', known as the 'IPID'. When you're comparing e-bike insurance you will always be presented with this document. It's a standard format across the industry and makes comparing cover and providers simpler"
